The 42nd Annual Orthopaedic Research Meeting of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) will be held on October 21-22, 2027, at the Kyoto International Conference Center. Founded as a venue where orthopaedic surgeons engage directly in fundamental research and scientific exchange, the meeting has grown into one of the JOA’s three major academic congresses, now attracting more than 1,500 participants annually. It is a great honor for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Shiga University of Medical Science to host this distinguished event, and we sincerely appreciate the continued support of our colleagues and collaborators.
Meeting Theme: "Shining on the Edge - Jijo Maren"
This year’s theme is inspired by Nakae Tōju, the "Saint of Ōmi" and a central figure in Yōmeigaku (Yangming philosophy) in Japan. His principle of Jijo Maren teaches that true refinement of knowledge and character arises through action and real world practice rather than quiet study alone. In orthopaedics, "jijo" reflects the realities of clinical care, surgery, and mentorship, while “maren” represents the continual sharpening of judgment, skill, and professional mindset. This dynamic philosophy influenced key figures in Japan’s modern history, including Ōshio Heihachirō, Yoshida Shōin, and Shibusawa Eiichi.
Key Icon: The Rising Dragon
The dragon serves as the key visual motif of this meeting. In Yōmeigaku tradition, the valleys where Wang Yangming trained evoke the image of a dragon in contemplation. The dragon symbolizes vitality, aspiration, and the powerful momentum born from disciplined action-qualities that resonate with the spirit of Jijo Maren. Many young orthopaedic surgeons attend this meeting each year, and we hope they will pass through the "gateway of the rising dragon," advancing toward becoming future leaders in orthopaedic science.
